Cleaning-preparation guide · Updated August 2026

How to declutter before cleaning

Before cleaning, remove only what blocks the booked work: loose objects on floors, primary counters, sinks, tubs, toilets and reachable furniture. Use four destinations—keep here, move elsewhere, remove from home and decide later—and stop when the cleaning surfaces are accessible.

Decluttering ends when cleaning access begins.

The answer first

Declutter in the order the cleaner needs access.

Do not start with sentimental storage, wardrobes or paper archives. Start with the routes and room surfaces included in the clean. The goal is not an organized home; it is a cleanable one.

1

Open the routes

Clear entries, stairs, hallways and the floor around the bed, sofa, toilet and kitchen work zone.

2

Expose the working surfaces

Remove dishes, toiletries, paperwork and loose belongings from the primary counter, sink, tub and reachable furniture.

3

Contain undecided items

Use one labelled basket per destination or room. Do not make the cleaner responsible for personal-item decisions.

The four-destination system

Every object gets a next move—even when it does not get a final home.

Use open baskets or containers so the decision stays visible and the cleaning surface becomes reachable.

Keep hereItems with a known home in the current roomPut away immediately

A 30-minute access reset

Use ten minutes where access matters most.

Move quickly and refuse new projects. If an object requires research, repair or family consensus, it goes to decide later.

01

10 minutes · floors and routes

Collect shoes, bags, laundry, toys, cords and anything that makes movement or floor care unsafe.

02

10 minutes · kitchen and bathroom

Handle dishes, food, toiletries, medication and textiles so sinks, counters, tub/shower and toilet are reachable.

03

10 minutes · furniture and bedrooms

Clear reachable tables, dressers and bed-side floors. Keep fragile or private items securely stored.

What not to hand off

Protect privacy, safety and the cleaning time.

A cleaning professional should not have to decide what is valuable, private, washable, recyclable or emotionally important.

01

Medication, documents and cash

Store them securely before entry. Do not leave privacy decisions on open surfaces.

02

Fragile and irreplaceable objects

Move them out of the active work area. Fragile-item handling is excluded.

03

Laundry and dish decisions

Laundry, ironing and dishwashing are not part of the standard package. Contain them so the included surfaces remain accessible.

04

Heavy or unsafe movement

Do not strain yourself or expect the professional to move heavy furniture, overloaded boxes or unstable storage.

Keep the clutter from returning

Give high-traffic objects an easier landing place.

A system fails when the official storage is harder to use than the nearest chair or counter. Build containment around where the object naturally arrives.

01

Entry drop zone

Assign hooks, a tray and a footwear boundary where bags, keys and wet gear already enter.

02

One basket per active room

Capture items leaving the room, then empty the basket during a scheduled reset.

03

One clear counter rule

Protect a single kitchen or bathroom surface so the home always has a usable starting point.

04

A date for undecided items

If the decide-later container has no review date, it becomes storage rather than a temporary decision tool.

“I’ve gone through a few house cleaning services in Vancouver over the years, and NearMe has easily been the most consistent. The booking process was straightforward, they arrived on time, and my home looked noticeably cleaner when they finished. It’s nice not having to follow up or remind anyone about the details. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a reliable cleaning service.”

“Prices are reasonable. Good cleaners and they provide their own supplies. You only need to supply your ow vacuum, mop, broom, etc. We initially got a cleaner who didn’t meet our standards, but they were able to send a better one after. Responsive with requests/inquiries. Had a couple of booking changes, but was able to correct within reason. Overall, good service!”
