Pet-home cleaning guide · Updated August 2026
Cleaning tips for pet owners: hair, muddy paws and everyday mess.
Pet hair, grit and odour spread through movement. Interrupt them at the entry, bedding, feeding and favourite resting zones; remove dry hair before wet cleaning; respond to accidents promptly; and keep pets away from products and damp surfaces until label directions say the area is safe.

The answer first
Focus on entryways, favourite resting spots and pet hair.
The entry, feeding area, favourite furniture and primary floor path usually produce most visible pet soil. A targeted dry pass there can prevent hair and grit from becoming a whole-home wet-cleaning problem.
Stop wet paws and grit before the main floor path
Keep a washable mat and towel where the pet actually enters, and clean that small zone before soil moves farther.
Use washable covers and a repeatable hair-removal pass
Bedding and favourite upholstery collect predictable soil; cleaning them on rhythm works better than chasing loose hair everywhere.
Follow labels and keep pets away until surfaces are safe
The ASPCA advises using cleaning products as directed, storing them securely and allowing cleaned areas to dry before pets return.
Pet-home frequency map
Clean by traffic and contact, not by room name alone.
Adjust for coat, shedding, weather, outdoor access, number of animals and any veterinary sensitivity.
| Zone | Frequent containment | Baseline cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| Entry and route | Dry paws; collect grit/hair as needed | Vacuum and appropriate hard-floor cleaning weekly or more often |
| Bedding and furniture | Remove loose hair; isolate damp/soiled fabric | Wash covers or follow upholstery care guidance |
| Feeding area | Handle spills and food promptly | Clean bowls and surrounding surface per safe guidance |
| Litter/toileting area | Remove waste through the pet-care routine | Clean the surrounding accessible zone separately |
| Whole home | Daily clutter and accident response | Standard recurring checklist on the needed rhythm |
Hair before moisture
Dry collection is the fastest way to keep pet hair from becoming residue.
Wet tools can roll loose hair into edges or onto the mop. Vacuum, sweep or lift it first, then clean the underlying surface with the approved method.
Vacuum in the direction the hair travels
Prioritize the pet route, under reachable furniture edges and the resting zone before quiet corners.
Check the tool often
Hair around brush rolls, wheels and filters reduces performance and can redistribute soil.
Protect floor finishes
Use the bare-floor setting and finish-approved cleaner on wood; avoid excess moisture in seams.
Wash the washable layer
Covers and mats create a controlled surface that can be cleaned more easily than the furniture or floor beneath.
Accidents and odour
Respond to the source instead of adding fragrance over it.
Remove solid material safely, blot liquid without spreading it and use a product approved for the material and pet household. Persistent odour can indicate contamination beyond ordinary surface cleaning.
Act promptly
Keep people and pets away, contain the area and follow the surface and product guidance.
Do not mix products
Health Canada warns against combining household chemicals. More chemistry is not a substitute for removing the source.
Know the service boundary
NearMe excludes animal waste and carpet shampooing or steam cleaning; use the appropriate specialist when the problem requires it.
Prepare for a professional cleaner
A safe pet plan is part of providing access.
Even a friendly animal can become stressed by unfamiliar people, equipment and open doors. Decide where the pet will be before the arrival window.
Secure the pet
Use a separate safe room, crate or off-site plan appropriate to the animal and household.
Share relevant sensitivities
Provide any veterinary or manufacturer direction that changes product choice or room access.
Keep the phone contact reachable
The responsible person should be available if access or pet location differs from the plan.

Authentic Google reviews describe NearMe detail, recurring consistency and support around the appointment.
Read our Google reviews ↗“I’ve tried a couple of cleaning services in Vancouver before, but NearMe has honestly been the most reliable so far. We’ve been using them for a few months now for regular cleaning, and the difference is consistency. The cleaners show up on time, they don’t rush through things, and the place actually feels properly cleaned after they leave. What I like most is that it doesn’t feel random every time like with other companies. There’s clearly a system they follow, which makes a big difference. Pricing is fair for what you get, and booking has been pretty smooth as well. No back and forth or confusion. If you’re looking for a dependable house cleaning service in Vancouver, I’d definitely recommend giving them a try.”
“I’ve gone through a few house cleaning services in Vancouver over the years, and NearMe has easily been the most consistent. The booking process was straightforward, they arrived on time, and my home looked noticeably cleaner when they finished. It’s nice not having to follow up or remind anyone about the details. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a reliable cleaning service.”
“Prices are reasonable. Good cleaners and they provide their own supplies. You only need to supply your ow vacuum, mop, broom, etc. We initially got a cleaner who didn’t meet our standards, but they were able to send a better one after. Responsive with requests/inquiries. Had a couple of booking changes, but was able to correct within reason. Overall, good service!”

Use a safe separate room, crate or off-site plan appropriate for the animal. Tell NearMe where the pet will be and how entry will work.
No. Animal waste and carpet shampooing or steam cleaning are service exclusions. Use an appropriate specialist when required.
Weekly can fit when hair, paw prints, bathrooms or floors require another substantial reset before day fourteen. Bi-weekly may be sufficient when the household contains pet soil effectively between visits.
