Home-care guide
How to clean a fabric sofa without guessing
Find the care label before reaching for a spray or hiring a cleaning machine. Start with loose crumbs and dust, then choose a method that suits the fabric. A sofa that tolerates a small amount of water-based upholstery cleaner may still be unsuitable for steam cleaning or machine-washing its covers.

Read the code, then the full instructions
The label may be beneath a loose seat cushion or on the furniture itself. Check any separate label on a removable cover too. If you cannot find it, use the model details to ask the manufacturer before wet cleaning.
| Code | What it generally permits |
|---|---|
| W | A suitable water-based upholstery shampoo or foam for spot cleaning, used as directed. |
| S | A suitable water-free cleaning solvent. Do not substitute water. |
| WS or SW | A permitted water-based upholstery cleaner or solvent, subject to the fabric's instructions. |
| X | Vacuuming or light brushing only. No foam or liquid cleaner. |
The code is a starting point, not a recipe. Follow the furniture maker's directions and the cleaner's label together. If they conflict or the fabric is fragile, ask for advice rather than testing a stronger product.

Remove loose dirt before treating a mark
Clear throws, toys and loose items from the sofa. Pick up coins or other hard objects by hand before vacuuming. Check that the upholstery attachment is clean and suitable for the fabric; a gritty floor tool is a poor choice for a seat cushion.
Use gentle passes over the arms, back and seats. Reach the seams with an appropriate attachment, without dragging it across loose threads, trim or damaged fabric. Lift removable cushions only if they are meant to come out, then clean the exposed seat area and cushion edges.
Keep powered reclining mechanisms clear of tools and liquids, and follow the furniture's safety instructions. Do not dismantle the sofa to reach crumbs. Our hidden dust traps guide covers the other easily missed areas around the room.
Deal with a fresh spill carefully
Lift away loose solids without pushing them into the fabric. Blot excess liquid with a clean white absorbent cloth, using a fresh area as it becomes wet. Avoid rubbing a spill across a larger patch.
Before applying any cleaner, check that the fabric permits it and test a small hidden area as directed. Let the test area dry and check for a colour or texture change. For an allowed spot treatment, use only the amount specified; soaking a cushion is not a more thorough version of spot cleaning.
For S-coded fabric, do not replace the recommended solvent with a homemade water mixture. If you are unfamiliar with solvent care, use a qualified upholstery cleaner. With X-coded fabric, keep to the dry method and seek advice about a remaining stain.
A zip does not mean the cover is washable
A cushion zip may be there for manufacture or fitting, rather than home laundering. Only remove and wash a cover when its own instructions allow it. Follow the stated washing, drying and refitting directions, even if a similar-looking cover can go in the machine.
Keep track of which cover belongs to which cushion if several are approved for removal. Do not wash the cushion filling unless its care instructions explicitly allow that too.
Check these before using a cleaning machine
Does W mean I can steam-clean the sofa?
No. For example, La-Z-Boy's W instructions permit suitable spot cleaners but specifically advise against hot-water extraction and steam cleaning. Get the instructions for your own fabric before using either method.
Can I use baking soda, vinegar or rubbing alcohol?
Do not choose a recipe from the fabric's appearance alone. Use a cleaner permitted for that particular upholstery. A common household ingredient is not automatically compatible with the fabric, backing or finish.
What if the whole sofa needs cleaning?
When the fabric is widely soiled, the label is missing or a stain remains after permitted care, contact a specialist upholstery cleaner. Share the care code, model and any products already applied. This helps them assess the job without another round of guessing.
