How to clean baseboards
Vacuum or dust the top edge and floor joint first. Identify whether the baseboard is painted wood, MDF, vinyl or another finish, then test warm water and a soft nonabrasive cloth in a hidden area. Add only a small amount of mild dish soap if the paint manufacturer permits it, wipe in short sections and dry immediately.

Baseboard cleaning is mostly dust control plus paint care.
The temptation is to reach for a melamine sponge or strong degreaser. Benjamin Moore instead starts painted surfaces with dust removal, warm water and a nonabrasive tool, escalating to mild dish soap only when needed.
Vacuum the ledge, face and floor joint
Use a soft brush attachment and collect hair, grit and dust before any damp cloth turns them into residue.
Confirm the paint tolerates the method
Use a hidden section and stop if colour, sheen or surface transfers to the cloth.
Work in sections and dry each one
Use controlled moisture, rinse residue where needed and keep water out of MDF seams, floor gaps and damaged paint.
Mark-by-mark decision
Not every dark line is removable soil.
Cleaning can restore ordinary dust and marks; it cannot replace missing paint or repair water damage.

The room sequence
Baseboards finish the dusting pass; they do not start the room.
Work high to low so ceiling, furniture and wall dust cannot settle on newly cleaned trim.
1 · Finish upper-room dusting
Complete reachable ledges, furniture and frames before moving to lower trim.
2 · Vacuum trim and floor edge
Collect dry soil with the correct attachment, including corners and the top lip.
3 · Spot-wash the visible soil
Use a barely damp soft cloth and manufacturer-approved mild solution only where dry care is insufficient.
4 · Dry and complete the floor
Remove remaining moisture before vacuuming or mopping the final floor pass.
Avoid damage disguised as cleaning
More abrasion can create a permanent clean-looking patch.
A changed sheen may look brighter from one angle and damaged from another. Use the same restraint you would use on the wall above it.
Skip abrasive pads
Benjamin Moore warns against abrasive sponges and scouring pads on painted surfaces.
Do not flood MDF
Water can enter seams, chips and floor joints. Use controlled moisture and dry immediately.
Do not clean uncured paint aggressively
Fresh paint needs the coating manufacturer's cure and care time before normal washing.

Chipped paint, failed caulk, swelling and water stains need repair or moisture correction.
