Bathroom mould: when to clean and when to get help

Bathroom mould is a moisture problem before it is a surface-cleaning problem.
Painting over the mark, adding fragrance or repeatedly bleaching it does not correct a leak, failed ventilation or wet building material. Health Canada does not recommend bleach for mould cleanup and does not recommend routine air testing to identify the species.
Find and correct why the area stays damp
Check plumbing, caulk, grout, exhaust, condensation and whether wet surfaces can dry after bathing.
Measure the total visible affected area
Small is up to three patches totalling less than 1 m²; medium is more than three patches or less than 3 m² total; large includes a single patch over 3 m².
Choose household cleanup or qualified remediation
Use Health Canada's protection and surface guidance only when the area and occupant conditions fit. Otherwise use qualified help.

Before any cleanup
Protect occupants and stop the water.
Do not disturb the area until you understand the extent, occupant vulnerability and whether contaminated material must be removed.
Move susceptible people away
Health Canada identifies children, seniors, pregnant people and those with asthma, severe allergies or weakened immune systems as potentially more susceptible.
Correct leaks and ventilation
Repair plumbing, caulk or building faults and make sure the exhaust fan vents outside and moves air effectively.
Use proper protection
For permitted small or medium cleanup, Health Canada specifies safety glasses or goggles, a disposable N95 respirator and disposable household gloves.
Know the material
Smooth washable tile differs from porous drywall, carpet, insulation and long-damp furnishings. Damaged porous material may require removal.

Wash suitable non-porous surfaces
Use a cloth with unscented soap solution, then dry the surface completely and quickly.
Keep drywall only damp
Use minimal moisture. Mould below paint or inside damaged drywall requires material removal and replacement.
Do not paint over mould
Paint hides the condition temporarily; it does not kill the growth or stop recurrence.
Verify that it stays dry
Returning mould usually indicates the moisture source was not corrected and requires professional assistance.
Prevent bathroom recurrence
Make drying part of every shower.
Health Canada recommends effective outside-vented exhaust, continued fan use after bathing and repair of cracked tile, grout and caulk.
Run the exhaust fan
Use it during bathing and keep it running for at least 30 minutes afterward, as Health Canada advises.
Squeegee wet walls
Remove standing water from shower and tub surrounds so the room starts drying sooner.
Repair failed seals
Open grout, caulk and tile joints can allow water behind the visible surface.
Keep indoor humidity controlled
Health Canada recommends roughly 30% to 50% relative humidity and attention to recurring condensation.
