How to wash bath mats without overlooking the backing
Turn the mat over before putting it in the washing machine. The soft top is only half the item. Check the care label, look for peeling or crumbling backing, and make sure your washer permits that type of mat and load.

This guide covers textile mats used on the bathroom floor. Suction-cup tub mats, stone mats and wooden slats need different care.

Three checks before washing
Read the label. Machine washable, hand wash and spot clean are different instructions. Do not assume that two mats with the same fluffy surface can share a wash cycle.
Check the underside. If the backing is coming away, keep it out of the washer. The Maids' rug-care guidance highlights crumbling backing as a reason to replace the mat. Washing will not rebuild it.
Check the load. A mat that fits through the door is not necessarily an appropriate load. Follow your washer's restrictions for bulky and water-resistant items. Do not pack the drum tightly to make several mats fit.
Machine washing an eligible mat
Shake loose hair and dirt out outdoors first. Treat any stains only with a product the mat permits. Use the detergent amount, temperature and cycle appropriate to the care label and washer.
Whirlpool's bath-mat guide recommends balancing a suitable mat load with other compatible items and using lower spin for water-resistant backing. That does not override a washer that excludes your mat. An extra rinse can help when soap remains.
When hand washing is allowed
Use a clean tub or large basin and mild laundry detergent at its hand-wash dilution. Follow the mat's water-temperature limit. Gently work the mat through the water, then drain and rinse until the soap is gone.
Press out excess water without aggressively twisting the backing. Support the wet mat as you lift it. Homespice's rubber-backed rug guidance stresses gentle handling and label-led care rather than treating every backing alike.
Dry the underside too
Use the drying method on the label. If tumble drying is not allowed, spread the mat over a rack with airflow around it. Do not return it to the floor just because the pile feels dry; check the backing and the folds as well.
If the label is missing, do not guess a heated-dryer setting. Identify the mat first. A long drying time is a reason to plan the wash earlier, not to use more heat than the item permits.
Wash when the mat is dirty, and check it during your regular bathroom clean. For the rest of the room, follow our bathroom-cleaning order.
