How to clean laminate floors without streaks or soaking

Remove loose grit first, then clean marks with a lightly damp microfibre mop and a cleaner labelled for laminate. Work in small sections, change a dirty pad and wipe up leftover moisture before moving on. The aim is to lift dirt—not leave the floor wet while the cleaner works.

You do not need to wet-mop the entire room every time. Dry cleaning handles loose dust; a soft cloth can take care of an isolated spill.

Illustrated laminate floor and flat mop with three steps: remove grit, mop lightly with laminate cleaner and wipe up remaining moisture.
Remove grit before damp cleaning; do not leave water around the joins.

Gather a few simple tools

Use a soft broom or vacuum with a hard-floor attachment, a microfibre flat mop, a clean spare pad and a soft cloth. A ready-to-use laminate cleaner avoids measuring concentrate. If you already have a concentrate, use its stated dilution rather than adding extra for a dirtier floor.

This routine is for laminate, not every surface that looks like wood. Timber and vinyl have different care requirements. Keep any known restrictions for your particular laminate in mind.

Clean the floor in four steps

1. Remove loose dirt

Pick up small objects, then sweep or vacuum corners, edges and walking areas. Use the hard-floor attachment rather than a rotating carpet beater bar. Check that the mop pad is free of grit. Shaw's laminate care guidance supports removing loose debris before cleaning with a suitable product.

2. Use a lightly damp pad

Apply the laminate cleaner as directed on its label. The pad should feel damp, not release water when pressed. Do not pour solution over the floor or let spray collect along the joins.

3. Work in small sections

Make overlapping passes, then check the area behind you. Swap a visibly dirty pad for the clean spare. Repeatedly moving the same dirty pad around is not another cleaning step.

For a sticky spill, wipe that spot with a soft, lightly damp cloth instead of flooding it. Lift what comes away with gentle passes, then dry the area. Do not scrape with a blade or add a solvent to an unidentified mark.

4. Remove remaining moisture

Wipe visibly wet patches with a dry cloth, especially beside joins and skirting. Let the area dry before returning rugs. Quick-Step's cleaning guide similarly separates dry debris removal from slightly damp cleaning.

If the floor looks streaky after drying

Replace the pad first, then try a small area with the correct amount of laminate cleaner. Too much product is not a reason to add another layer. Follow the product's residue-removal or rinsing directions with controlled moisture, and compare the dry patch before repeating across the room.

If the patch improves, continue with clean pads and the corrected amount. If it does not, stop adding products: a coating, wear or damage needs a different answer from ordinary soil. Wax and polish are not a shortcut to restoring laminate's finish.

Leave steam out of the default routine

Shaw advises against steam on its laminate, while some Quick-Step HydroSeal ranges permit it under specific conditions. Use the mop routine above unless your exact flooring permits steam. A waterproof label alone does not settle that question.

Raised edges or separated joins will not be fixed by stronger cleaning. Keep those areas dry and have the damage assessed rather than repeatedly wetting them.
