How to clean vinyl plank floors without leaving a film

This guide is for vinyl planks, not laminate or timber. If yours is laminate, use our laminate-floor routine.

Get the loose dirt out of the way

Use a soft broom or a vacuum attachment suitable for your floor. Pay attention to the edges and the route through the room before damp cleaning. A mop pad carrying grit is not ready for the next pass.

Gather a clean flat-mop pad, a spare pad and a soft cloth for isolated marks. Shaw's vinyl-care guidance recommends neutral-pH cleaning products rather than vinegar, ammonia or abrasive cleaners.

Mop without overdoing the product

Apply your vinyl cleaner at its stated dilution. A ready-to-use product does not need extra concentrate; a concentrate needs measuring, not an extra splash because the floor looks dirty.

Work in sections with a damp pad. Change or rinse the pad when it becomes dirty instead of carrying the same grey water through the room. Finish any rinsing required by the cleaner and remove leftover wet patches. Keep people off the floor until it is dry.

Karndean's care guidance also recommends a damp mop and vinyl-approved, neutral-pH cleaner. Its instructions caution against steam cleaning. A waterproof product description does not, by itself, approve every cleaning method.

If the floor still looks streaky

Try a small comparison patch before repeating the whole room. Use a fresh pad and follow your cleaner's rinse instructions. Let that patch dry fully.

• If the patch looks clearer, continue with clean pads and the correct dilution.
• If it looks unchanged, do not add polish to hide the mark. Check whether it is a coating, scuff or damage rather than ordinary dirt.
• If a plank is lifting or separating, keep the area dry and have it assessed. Mopping cannot repair the joint.

This is a way to narrow down the problem, not a test that identifies every residue or finish.

What should stay out of the routine?

Shaw's Floorte maintenance sheet rules out steam, rotating beater bars and mop-and-shine products for that range. Do not treat a homemade cleaner or an abrasive sponge as automatically suitable for other vinyl floors either.
