How to clean painted interior doors gently

Dust the door first, then start on fingerprints with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water. If the paint allows it and water is not enough, try a mild soap solution. Work gently, remove residue and dry the area rather than soaking the door or scrubbing one mark repeatedly.

Check the paint before you start

Look for peeling, chips or a finish that already feels sticky. Leave damaged areas alone and check the paint maker's advice before cleaning a recently painted door. Dry to the touch does not necessarily mean ready to wash.

Flat and matte finishes generally need a lighter touch than higher-sheen paint. If you do not know the paint, try your proposed method on a small hidden area and let it dry before judging the result. Stop if the colour transfers, the sheen changes or the surface softens.

Get the door and floor ready

Clear the swing of the door and position it so it will not move against you while you clean. Keep fingers clear of the hinge side. Put a towel below the work area and have clean wiping, rinsing and drying cloths ready.

You do not need to remove the door, handle or hinges for routine surface cleaning. Keep the task to the parts you can reach comfortably.

Use a lightly dampened cloth on a suitable finish, then dry the area.

Dust the panels, edges and frame

Use a soft dry cloth to collect dust from reachable horizontal edges and panel ledges before wiping the larger faces. A clean soft brush can help with shallow decorative grooves. Avoid scraping at corners with a hard tool.

Open the door enough to reach the exposed edge safely. Dust that edge and the accessible frame, taking care around the latch and hinges. Do not push a damp cloth into lock openings or moving hardware.

Wipe fingerprints with the gentlest suitable method

Start with plain water on a well-wrung soft cloth. Try the small marked area without leaving it wet. If this works, there is no reason to add another product.

For remaining grime on a finish that allows mild soap, use the diluted solution recommended for the surface. Apply it to the cloth rather than spraying the door. Work in small sections, then remove residue with a separate lightly dampened cloth and dry with a soft towel.

Check the result in normal room light after it dries. A wet patch can hide a change in sheen. Avoid abrasive pads, heavy-duty degreasers and repeated hard rubbing; a remaining mark can be less noticeable than a polished or worn patch of paint.

Treat the handle as a separate surface

Paint, plated metal and other handle finishes may need different products. Follow the handle maker's care directions, wipe with a suitable cloth and dry it. Keep liquid out of keyholes and mechanisms.

If you use a disinfectant on compatible hardware, follow that product's directions rather than treating a quick wipe as proof of disinfection. Keep it off adjacent paint unless the paint instructions permit it.

Painted-door cleaning questions

Why does the paint feel tacky after cleaning?

Stop using the cleaner and avoid more rubbing. The product, finish or curing condition may be unsuitable for washing. Ask the paint manufacturer or a decorator before trying another chemical; cleaning harder will not repair softened paint.

Can I use a melamine sponge on a scuff?

Do not make an abrasive sponge your default on painted doors. It may alter the surface. Start with the gentler method and use only treatments the paint maker permits for that finish.

Will cleaning make a yellowed white door white again?

It may remove surface grime, but it cannot promise to reverse discolouration within the finish. If a gentle clean does not help, get advice about the paint rather than continuing to scrub.
