How to remove hair from a vacuum brush roll

Switch the vacuum off and isolate its power before touching the brush roll. Unplug a corded machine; for cordless models, disconnect the charger and follow the model's battery and head-removal instructions. Start by removing loose hair dry. A roller that comes out is not automatically a roller you can wash.

Isolate power and remove loose hair dry. Only wash parts explicitly identified as washable for your model.

Make the brush easy to reach

Work on a clear, dry surface. Detach the cleaner head where its instructions allow, then expose the underside. Use only the designated latch or release to remove a user-serviceable roller. Do not pry open a sealed housing.

For example, BISSELL's Multi Reach instructions require switching off, removing the battery and separating the powered head before releasing the roller. Other machines have different releases.

Lift the hair without cutting the brush

Pull away strands that come free easily and collect loose lint. Check the exposed ends of the roller as well as its middle. Leave bristles, seals and belts in place.

If hair is tightly wrapped, use the cutting tool or groove described for your model, if one is provided. Do not slide a blade blindly underneath the tangle or cut across bristles. If the hair is trapped behind a part that is not meant to come off, stop there rather than forcing it.

Wipe loose debris from the accessible brush chamber. BISSELL's PowerClean instructions distinguish a dirty roller from a damaged roller or broken latch. Cleaning cannot repair those parts.

Can you rinse the roller?

Only when the instructions for that exact part allow it. Do not put the complete motorized head under a tap.

The Dyson SV10 manual gives separate procedures for its direct-drive head and soft-roller brush bars. The specified washable bars are removed, rinsed and left upright to dry completely for at least 24 hours. That permission does not apply to every Dyson head or every removable roller.

For ordinary loose hair, do the dry removal first. There is no need to add a drying job when the debris already comes away.

Refit before testing

Put every required part back in its correct position and secure the latch. Never test a powered head with the roller or protective cover missing. Restore power only after reassembly, with hands clear, and test in the normal floor-cleaning position.

If the roller still stalls or makes an unusual noise, switch off again and use the model's troubleshooting guidance. Do not keep running it to see whether the problem clears itself.
