How to clean a vacuum filter and dry it properly
Switch the vacuum off and unplug it before removing a filter. Some filters take water only, some washable foam filters take mild detergent, and others must stay dry. Identify the part first, then use the matching method below.

The useful distinction is whether a filter is washable—not whether it looks like foam or a pleated cartridge. One machine can contain parts with different cleaning requirements.

Identify each filter once
Find the model number on the machine and check whether you are handling a pre-motor or post-motor filter. Look for “washable,” water temperature and detergent restrictions on the filter label or the model's filter-care page.
Keep that method with your cleaning supplies so you do not repeat the research every time. If care is unknown, do not soak the part to find out.
Water-only cleaning for specified Dyson cordless filters
For washable filters covered by Dyson Canada's cordless filter-care guide:
- Remove the filter and gently tap loose dust into a bin.
- Rinse under cold running water, lightly working the material with your hands. Do not add detergent.
- For the fill-and-shake stage, Dyson specifies warm tap water. Cover the open ends with your hands and shake; repeat until the water runs clear.
- Shake out excess water. Leave the filter with good airflow for at least 24 hours, and longer if it is not completely dry.
Do not use a tumble dryer, microwave or flame to hurry it along. Follow a different model-specific procedure where supplied; this method is not for every vacuum carrying the Dyson brand.
Mild-soap cleaning for specified BISSELL foam filters
The BISSELL CleanView/PowerClean instructions distinguish two parts.
The foam pre-motor filter sits at the top of the dirt tank. With the vacuum off and unplugged, release the tank, open its lid and remove the filter. Hand-wash that part in warm water with mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely. Refit it and close the tank securely.
The post-motor filter above the height-adjustment control must not be washed with water or detergent. Remove it, gently tap away loose dust and refit it securely.
“Soak the filter in soapy water” would therefore be wrong for one of these two filters, even though they belong to the same machine.
Allow for drying before you start
Clean a washable filter after the vacuuming is finished, not just before you need the machine. Leave it in the drying position specified for the part, with air circulation around it.
Treat a stated drying time as a minimum, not a guarantee. Dyson's guide above specifies at least 24 hours; BISSELL's cited procedure requires complete drying without prescribing that same universal duration. If the filter is still damp, wait.
A compatible spare can help when the machine's instructions allow it. Do not run the vacuum with required filters missing. A torn filter or one that no longer fits securely needs the correct replacement part; washing does not repair it.
Make filter care repeatable
Keep a short note of each filter's cleaning and drying requirements. Check its condition when doing the next scheduled clean so damage is not mistaken for dust that needs another wash.
