How to get rid of house smells
Remove the source first, clean the affected surface with a material-safe method, correct moisture or ventilation problems and then air the space when outdoor conditions allow. Fragrance can change what the room smells like; it does not remove spoiled food, waste, dampness, smoke residue, a dry drain or a failing appliance.

The answer first
Find and remove the source of the smell.
EPA guidance identifies source control as the most effective response to many indoor-air problems, followed by ventilation and filtration where appropriate. A persistent smell may require cleaning, repair, moisture correction, pest control or an urgent safety response.
Narrow the smell by room, time and surface
Note when it appears, whether humidity or appliance use changes it and which material holds it after the room airs out.
Eliminate the physical source
Discard spoiled material safely, contain waste, clean spills and textiles appropriately, and fix leaks or drainage conditions.
Air the room and check what remains
Ventilate when outdoor conditions are suitable. If the smell returns, the source has not been solved.
Odour triage
Use the character of the smell to choose the next professional—not to diagnose it yourself.
Leave the area and use emergency or qualified help when a smell suggests gas, electrical burning, sewage or another hazard.
| Odour pattern | First safe check | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Food or waste | Refrigerator, pantry, waste, disposal area and hidden spill | Contamination or pests exceed ordinary cleaning |
| Musty or earthy | Condensation, leak, damp textile, bathroom and window areas | Mould is large, recurring or the moisture source is unknown |
| Pet-related | Bedding, litter, accident location, fabrics and floor edges | Animal waste or deep material contamination requires specialist work |
| Burning, gas, sewage or chemical | Do not continue ordinary cleaning | Follow emergency, utility, building or qualified-trade guidance immediately |
Room-by-room source check
Inspect where moisture, food and soft material meet.
The strongest smell is not always at the source. Use a repeatable route instead of spraying each room and hoping the problem disappears.
Kitchen
Check refrigerator drip and food zones, waste, sink or disposal area, dishwasher filters, range residue and hidden spills beside appliances.
Bathroom and laundry
Check wet textiles, drains, toilet base, grout or sealant, washer gasket, standing water and ventilation.
Bedrooms and living spaces
Check upholstery, bedding, pet areas, shoes, smoking residue, plants, waste and damp exterior walls or windows.
Entry, storage and mechanical areas
Check wet footwear, bins, floor drains, stored cardboard, leaks and appliance or electrical odours.
Cleaning helps only after diagnosis
Match the treatment to the affected material.
A washable hard surface, sealed wood, upholstery and unsealed porous material cannot be treated as the same odour problem.
Hard washable surfaces
Use the material-approved cleaning method, rinse where directed and dry fully.
Removable textiles
Follow the textile care label and dry completely. Damp fabric can replace one smell with another.
Upholstery and carpet
Blot and use manufacturer-safe spot care. Carpet shampooing and steam extraction are separate specialist services.
Building material or repeated moisture
Cleaning the exposed surface is incomplete until the water source and affected construction are assessed.
What not to do
Do not create a second air-quality problem while hiding the first.
Odour intensity is not a reliable measure of indoor-air safety, and a pleasant scent is not proof that a source has been removed.
Do not mix products
Health Canada warns never to mix household chemicals. More reactions do not mean more cleaning.
Do not overspray fragrance
Use scent only by preference after source removal, with ventilation and occupant sensitivities in mind.
Do not ignore returning mustiness
Investigate dampness, ventilation and leaks. Health Canada recommends correcting the moisture source.
Do not clean through a hazard
Gas, electrical burning, sewage, biohazards and infestation require the appropriate emergency or specialist response.

What NearMe customers say
Authentic Google reviews describe NearMe detail, consistency and support around the appointment.
Read our Google reviews ↗“I’ve tried a couple of cleaning services in Vancouver before, but NearMe has honestly been the most reliable so far. We’ve been using them for a few months now for regular cleaning, and the difference is consistency. The cleaners show up on time, they don’t rush through things, and the place actually feels properly cleaned after they leave. What I like most is that it doesn’t feel random every time like with other companies. There’s clearly a system they follow, which makes a big difference. Pricing is fair for what you get, and booking has been pretty smooth as well. No back and forth or confusion. If you’re looking for a dependable house cleaning service in Vancouver, I’d definitely recommend giving them a try.”
“I’ve gone through a few house cleaning services in Vancouver over the years, and NearMe has easily been the most consistent. The booking process was straightforward, they arrived on time, and my home looked noticeably cleaner when they finished. It’s nice not having to follow up or remind anyone about the details. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a reliable cleaning service.”
“Prices are reasonable. Good cleaners and they provide their own supplies. You only need to supply your ow vacuum, mop, broom, etc. We initially got a cleaner who didn’t meet our standards, but they were able to send a better one after. Responsive with requests/inquiries. Had a couple of booking changes, but was able to correct within reason. Overall, good service!”

Frequently asked questions
Clear answers to the questions customers ask before choosing a service, schedule or cleaning company.
Find and remove the source, clean the affected material safely, correct moisture or ventilation and air the room when conditions allow. Fragrance alone is not source removal.
The odour may be inside porous material, connected to moisture, drainage, an appliance, pests or a hidden spill. Recheck the source rather than adding stronger scent.
No universal product removes every odour from every material. Use the material or appliance manufacturer's guidance and solve the source first.
Check for condensation, leaks, damp materials and ventilation. Health Canada advises controlling moisture and using qualified assessment for large or recurring mould problems.
NearMe can clean ordinary accessible household surfaces within the booked scope. Animal waste, carpet extraction, biohazards and deep contamination are excluded and may require specialist treatment.
